Apple's new virtual speakers can let you hear where people are physically located in a room.
Apple has been working on AR software exploring new ways of using augmented reality. Recently Apple has been granted a patent for virtual audio. This filing is based on an earlier patent submitted by Apple in November for a headset.
With this patent, you will be able to tell where a person is sitting and talk across the room based on the sound.
The new patent speaks about the same technology, including this one is filed for built-in MacBook speakers.
According to a 9to5Mac report, the patent is about a virtual acoustic system that creating illusion, and the user may not actually spot the sound source (loudspeakers). It may seem like the sound comes from elsewhere and not from the speaker, it doesn't matter even if you're standing close to it.

This technology works by "canceling crosstalk" as per the article, as it uses noise cancellation on the one side of the Macbook so it seems like the sound is coming from the other side.
According to Apple, this effect is to allow audio signals to include "spatial cues" allowing a sound to be virtually placed in a space. The patent was originally filed back in 2018. The company may take a similar approach for HomePod , where the mic can pick up the reflected audio and output can be adjusted as per the room. By adjusting the combination of reflected and direct sound, the output can be customized . with this way, user will not be able to identify the origin of the sound.
With this technology, built-in speakers will really improve the experience when watching a movie or playing a game. But, when the company plans to launch a product with this technology, we don't have any idea. One thing to keep in mind is that in many situations, where products with patented technology never see the day of light.
